In my home studio, I play a hybrid kit.
It is a four-piece DW with acoustic cymbals, quiet mesh heads, and triggers on the kick, snare, and toms. The cymbals go through mics and the API 3124V preamp chain. The kick, snare, and toms are captured as MIDI in the same live pass.
That split is why I like working this way. Cymbals and hi-hats have a wash and decay that samples do not handle as naturally, so I record them with microphones. The quiet mesh heads keep shell bleed in those mics to a minimum, which means the kick, snare, and tom sounds can change after the take without me replaying the part. Some stick attack still gets into the cymbal tracks, but it EQs out easily, and whatever is left blends in under the sampled shells.

More than 30 years behind the kit
I started out playing in garage bands and spent much of high school in the jazz band, an experience that still shapes how I approach the drums. In the late 1990s, I played drums and bass with Skitzo Calypso, then kept playing in several groups at the University of Delaware, including the jazz band. That led to The Healthy Doses, where I learned how to gig and tour. We played Newark venues including Deer Park Tavern and The East End Cafe, as well as Phish’s Camp Oswego festival.
That work led to Omnisoul, which grew from a regional independent band into The Crash Motive after we signed with Wind-up Records. We toured nationally, opened for Sugar Ray, Collective Soul, Lifehouse, The B-52s, and The All-American Rejects, and recorded at Avatar Studios in New York City and The Pass in Los Angeles. Our music appeared on Fantastic 4: The Album, in Madden NFL 07, and during the Super Bowl XLII broadcast.
After The Crash Motive, I co-founded SpeakerCity and spent five years playing as many as three shows a week at weddings, corporate events, clubs, universities, and a weeklong residency at Sloppy Joe’s in Key West. Today, I continue to record, collaborate, and make music from my home studio in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania.
